Stancraft:

From Boats to Buildings

Incorporating Human-Centric Lighting and Technology with Entertainment in Mind

Background

Owner of Stancraft Boats Robb Bloem discusses the journey from their storied history with wooden boat construction and restoration to create a custom building industry. With the goal of job creation and offering a superior product to Idaho residents, Stancraft has partnered with Wipliance to help bring their clients' dreams to reality with luxury solutions for home technology and automation in their custom projects. Wipliance was asked to help the Bloem family create their perfect retreat with elegant technology solutions.

The challenge

This project had many custom details and a timeline- with a beautiful summer ahead, Robb wanted to get the space dialed in time to enjoy the home and entertain. This meant finalizing many custom details with efficiency.

The goals

To create easy-to-use and dynamic home automation for:

  • Motorized shades that preserve view or offer privacy where desired, in large locations (including the largest operational window wall in the Pacific Northwest)
  • TVs in key areas for entertaining (including outside) and custom TV treatments to allow them to blend with the design
  • Distributed audio so that music can be kept at the desired volume in different areas but carries throughout the property
  • Clearly engraved Palladiom lighting control keypads that offer quick access to lights and shades
  • High quality LED lighting that offers tunability for different times of day, and the ability to individually address each fixture
  • A single control interface to allow the homeowner to bring technology together in harmony

Our approach

Careful Attention to Detail

Architect and Designer Eric Hedlund discusses the specification of materials similar to those used in boat construction to pay tribute to the family's history, as well as the importance of well-designed lighting on the project. Wipliance's use of intelligent lighting solutions like Ketra by Lutron allows the homeowner to harness natural light in this indoor/outdoor design. In addition, the full spectrum of color compliments the amazing backdrop at sunset- and with a single touch can set the whole home to a relaxing or energizing environment. Each fixture can be individually controlled for maximum flexibility. All of the layers of light are easily managed thanks to the Lutron Homeworks QSX system with Palladiom keypads that offer clearly labeled buttons.

This home was built for entertaining, so it was crucial to have TVs, speakers and distributed audio in all of the right places- both indoors and out. Wipliance utilized a motorized TV mount to tuck the kitchen TV away when not in use, and Samsung's Terrace outdoor TVs can withstand harsh elements and are made for direct sunlight viewing. No homeowner wants to spend hours managing their home technology- so it's important that these systems are easy to use and enjoyable to own. Wipliance utilized a Control4 home automation system to allow the homeowner to manage lights, shades, security, audio/video and more from home or wherever they are using the mobile app.

Comments from the client:

"After working with Wipliance on the house, we have changed almost every single custom home we have (locally) to work with Wipliance. That’s how much of an impact they had on this house."

Robb Bloem, Stancraft Construction (Homeowner)

"Wipliance was able to provide the detail, customer service and the quality that we need in our residences."
