Wipliance, a premier Lutron dealer based in Bellevue, Washington, was recently honored to receive Lutron’s excellence award for a long-term project in Seattle. The Spire is a 343-residence luxury condominium tower in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood, close to the city’s iconic Space Needle. A unique feature of this project was that it encompassed solutions found in both commercial and residential environments, and we are especially pleased with the opportunity to work on this project from its inception.

Lutron Homeworks and Triathlon motorized window shade solutions formed the core of smart solutions found throughout the tower. Keep reading to learn more about our collaboration with the building’s developers to bring these Lutron solutions to the Spire along with integrated audio, video and control.

Smart from the Start

We especially appreciated the opportunity to collaborate with the builder from the beginning, planning for smart amenities with Lutron lighting control and shading to enhance the tower's modern design and appeal. It started at the offsite sales center, long before construction began, where we outfitted the center and model with Lutron premium Homeworks lighting control and Triathlon shading. The Spire team had the vision and forethought of planning for smart technology in the units, creating tailored packages for buyers to add smart lighting and shading. To help buyers better envision the finished product, we created a 3-D projection system in the sales center so they could see the views from their condo through augmented reality.

The early collaboration with the architect, designers, and trades allowed for careful planning for wiring the project with shades in mind. Ultimately, two Lutron Homeworks processors connected by a high-speed fiber link control common area shades across the 30-story building. However, the project was not without its challenges, having to work through work shutdowns during the pandemic and more recent supply chain disruptions, which we worked through with Lutron.

Lutron Everywhere

The building, completed earlier this year, contains 3700 Lutron shades ranging from manual to wireless motorized in every window of the tower. Not only are they in the private residences, but they are also in the amenity spaces like the chef's kitchen, movie theater, coworking space, dance studio, and gyms. The shades help manage natural light conveniently on all these windows while quickly revealing the beautiful city and Puget Sound views afforded by the tower's prime location.

Residents were offered easy-to-choose packages to customize their units. Several packages, including Triathlon shades, Radio RA2 Select lighting control, and Homeworks controllers, were offered as upgrades to the basic unit amenities.

Smart Building Amenities

Aside from lighting and shading, Wipliance added other features to create a luxurious environment in the building's common areas. This included enhanced TV sound with custom Leon soundbars that integrate neatly with the flat panel displays, Origin architectural speakers for high-quality audio, and Control4 automation systems for simplified control of the building’s smart amenities.

Featured in the Summer 2022 issue of Connected Design, we are proud of this award and our collaboration with the Spire team and Lutron on this special project.
